Willie Park, Jr. & Thomas Winton

Willie Park, Jr.

Willie Park, Jr. was an accomplished golfer with a pedigree to match -- Park, Jr. won two British Opens, his father won four, and his uncle Mungo won one as well. But Park is best memorialized today in the courses that he designed -- over 150 tracks across Europe and North America. He is directly responsible for at least five courses in Connecticut. Park was a naturalist, preferring let his courses follow the natural landscape as much as possible. His courses frequently feature diagonal hazards to distract and disorient golfers, and to force them to make difficult strategic decisions on the course. Much less is know about Thomas Winton, but we do know that he traveled to the United States with Park and worked alongside him before breaking off on his own. From what survives of known Tom WInton courses, he appears to have continued building courses in the same mold as that of his mentor.
