Goodwin Gutty Open at Goodwin Park Golf Course

The Connecticut Hickory Golf Association is excited to announce the first annual Goodwin Gutty Open at Goodwin Park Golf Course on Monday, September 30th, 2024.  Tee times will begin at 11:00AM.  Join us for a casual and fun introduction to hickory and gutty golf this fall!  Period attire is not required but is encouraged.

Play will be divided into two flights: Gutty (pre-1905 equipment) and "Modern" (pre-1935 equipment) and will consist of 9 holes on the historic North course (the "flat nine").  After a lunch break (pay your way) and awards, golfers are invited to play another casual nine in the afternoon.  For the "Gutty" flight, a registration fee of $40 will include eighteen holes of golf, one McIntyre gutta percha "Park" line-cut ball, and awards.  For the "Modern" flight, the registration fee covers eighteen holes of golf, a sleeve of Wright & Ditson square mesh balls, and awards.  Modern hickories are available to rent for $20 per set.  A limited number of pre-1905 gutty sets are available to rent as well -- please contact Jacob for inquiries on gutty set rentals.  A limited number of replica balls will be available for purchase at the event -- please consider bringing your own spares.  Walking is highly encouraged on this short, flat course; but cart rentals are available for an additional $19 per player.

Players who wish to compete in the "Gutty" flight should note the following equipment guidelines: Irons and putters may not have any scoring, punches, or other patterns on the face of the clubs. Woods must be splice-necked. Putters must be heel-shafted, and metal putters must be "blade" style. No aluminum heads. Exceptions to these guidelines will be made if a club can be proven to pre-date 1900. Gutty divisions must play with the "Park" style gutta percha ball. Distance measuring devices are not allowed for Gutty play. Drawn/sketched yardage books are allowed, but yardage books that include photos are not. Small diameter golf bags and period-appropriate attire are encouraged.

The format is stroke play.  The top scorers in each flight will be recognized, as well as the low senior scorers.  There is no net division for this event.

Payment is due to Jacob (by cash, check, or Venmo/Paypal) at the course on the day of the event.  Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions!
