Wayne Stiles

Wayne Stiles began his career in golf architecture as a partner with John Van Kleek. They worked together to design courses, often accompanied by housing developments, until the Great Depression hit the nation. Stiles continued to design golf courses on his own, ultimately designing at least 140 courses throughout his career. One of the defining traits of Stiles courses is a somewhat labyrinthine routing -- holes change directions often and generally are tree-lined so that each hole feels like it's own entity, rather than part of a larger course. Greens are often subtly contoured with false fronts. Stiles was not one of the premier architects of his era, but his courses are almost always enjoyable.
