Walter Travis

Walter Travis

Walter Travis was one of the great golfers of his era: a three time U.S. Amateur champion, one time British Amateur champ, and a runner-up in the 1902 U.S. Open. Records from 1927 list him as the winningest match-play competitor of his time with 45 victories, trailing only Bobby Jones (42 wins) and Francis Ouimet (43) in winning percentage. He was also a notable golf architect, whose legacy is highlighted by eschewing "cross bunkers" (bunkers that span the entire width of the fairway) for bunkers placed strategically along the edges of the fairway instead. Additionally he is credited with designing some of the best greens in American golf.
